Kitchen: The kitchen in our Kuhio Shores condo has been completely redesigned and features solid oak cabinets, white kashmere granite slab counter tops, and a $5,000 Sub Zero refrigerator. The kitchen is fully equipped with blenders, toasters, crock pots, rice cookers, spices, pots and pans, wine glasses, coffee makers and a built-in microwave oven. Appliances are white on white. Lighting is recessed with dimmers. Eating is in a dining room that is really more like a large breakfast nook. The dining room table has a rattan base with a glass top. Four people can sit at the table. A ceiling fan with lighting is overhead. Surrounded by floor to ceiling windows, the views from the dining area are spectacular. You're so close to the ocean, you sometimes feel like you're in it. Two people can also sit at the bar area located next to the kitchen. Seating there is on swivel bar stools. The bar area has white kashmere granite slab counter tops and a great ocean view too! If you prefer to barbecue your meals, Kuhio Shores has several propane fired barbecues located on the property.
Bathrooms: Our master bathroom has also been completely redesigned. It is far superior to the original design. The owners of unit #110, #218, and #417 at Kuhio Shores have copied this design. The second bathroom is located off the hallway outside the door to the second bedroom. Both bathrooms are finished from floor to ceiling with white carrera marble. There are no bath tubs, only showers. Each shower has clear glass sliding doors. Imported sea shell sinks have dolphin and sea horse shaped faucets. All towels as well as hair dryers are provided. Glass block was used as a decorating touch throughout.
Bedrooms: The trade winds on Kauai blow directly into the bedrooms of our condo at Kuhio Shores, keeping it nice and cool for sleeping. Not many condos in Poipu stay as cool as our Poipu condominium during warm weather. The master bedroom has a brand new Tommy Bahama king size pillow top bed, dressers, and night stands. The master also has a separate entry door from the outside which has a wooden louvered screen door that allows a great breeze to flow into the bedroom while still maintaining total privacy. The second bedroom has a pillow top queen bed and new Tommy Bahama furniture too. The windows in each bedroom have brand new shutters. Each bedroom has a chest of drawers and a full size closet with mirrored wardrobe doors. Ceiling fans and the sounds of the ocean are in each bedroom. All linens are supplied. Glass block was also used in each bedroom as a decorating touch. The quality in this condo exceeds that found in any of the Kauai Hotels.
Snorkeling: Sunset Magazine once named the area on the West side of Kuhio Shores as the best snorkeling spot in Poipu Beach. On any given day, you'll see 20-50 snorkelers in the water at once. Snorkeling equipment is in the condo. If it isn't, you can rent snorkeling equipment at Snorkel Bobs, just a quarter mile from the condo. The fish love to eat frozen vegetables. Be careful when you feed the fish that they don't nibble on your fingers (their table manners are not very good!) Don't try to touch the turtles. On occasion, you'll see a monk seal. The ocean currents in this area can get strong when the surf breaking outside the reef is large. Know your limits. If in doubt, the rule is, don't go out. It's never a bad idea to take a floating device with you.
Surfing & boogie boarding: Directly out the back door are four of the best surf spots on the South Shore of Kauai. Smokey's is a left break over a rocky reef. The bigger it gets, the better it is. It doesn't break when the swell is too small. Next to Smokey's is a break called PK's, short for Prince Kuhio. It is a right break which begins as a wave that has reformed after breaking at Smokey's. The next surf spot to the west is called Centers. It is mainly a right but at times has a good left break. The bigger it gets, the better it gets. It can hold 20 foot faces. You better be in great physical condition if you intend to surf Centers when it's over 6 feet. The next surf spot to the West of Center's is called Acid Drops. It is a gnarly right reef break. It breaks surfboards all day long when its big. It has the largest tube ride on the south shore. For those of you that don't surf; surfing looks easy! The truth is, it isn't. If you don't surf often enough, your arms begin to feel like spaghetti after several minutes of paddling. Once that happens, things can go downhill very quickly. Beginners SHOULD NOT TRY surfing at any of these spots except on small surf days. Make sure to wear a surf leash. The bottom is a rocky reef and is very shallow in spots. DO NOT DIVE OFF YOUR BOARD. Belly flops only! Watch the local kids and see how they do things before going out.
Scuba diving: Lessons are available every day on either side of Kuhio Shores. Snorkel Bob's, just up the road from Kuhio Shores, is a good place to contact for lessons. Almost every afternoon, you'll see as many as 20 scuba divers in the water at one time just to the east of Smokeys surf break, or on the west side of Kuhio Shores. The scuba diving companies issue wetsuits, fins, flotation devices, and all other necessary gear.
Tide pools: During low tide, visitors can enjoy exploring the tide pools that are located in the volcanic reef just 35 feet from our Kuhio Shores condo. All types of marine life exist in the tide pools. The volcanic rock can be sharp in places so it is adviseable to use footwear. On incoming tide, when the surf is large, use caution. The algae that grows on the portion of the reef that is normally underwater is very slippery.
Restaurants: One of the best restaurants on the Island of Kauai, The Beach House Restaurant, is just a few steps from Kuhio Shores. Every evening, as many as 100 people will gather there for happy hour and to watch the sunsets; sunsets that you can see from your lanai, or from inside our Kuhio Shores condo itself. Many other great restaurants are less than a three minute drive into Poipu. If you prefer to barbecue your meals, Kuhio Shores has several propane fired barbecues located on the property.
Weddings: Almost every evening you will see people being married on the lawn of the Beach House Restaurant, or if the tide is low, on the volcanic reef mentioned above. If you intend to get married while on Kauai, you might want to call The Beach House Restaurant to make arrangements for the use of their property. The view from the lawn of the restaurant is as good as it gets anywhere!
Golf courses: There are two golf courses in Poipu Beach. The most challenging golf course is the Poipu Bay Golf Resort, located next to the Hyatt Regency Hotel. The Grand Slam of Golf is held at that site every November. The other golf course in Poipu is the Kiahuna Golf Course. It is a 1/4 mile inland from the Kiahuna Plantation Condominium Resort. Both golf courses are less than a five minute drive from Kuhio Shores.
Kauai Hotels: The Hyatt Regency Hotel and the Sheraton Hotel are the two major hotels in Poipu Beach. They both have beautiful grounds, but the rooms don't have kitchens. Their rates are much higher than what we charge.
HAVE A GREAT VACATION IN KAUAI, wherever you decide to stay!
